Five Rings Online was started by Jeff Vandenberg, me, during one particularly strong kick to play L5R. After seeing and STing on White Wolf's Moderated Chats, I thought that a moderated L5R chat online would be entertaining. (With much less crossover headaches as well). So I set about gathering GMs who would be able help moderate it, run stories, NPCs and what not. All because the game is that good. I also don't want to see the 2nd edition style rules die in favor of d20 Rokugan. I feel that the setting and the system mesh particularly well which is one of the things that got me into the game initially.

The game will be set two years after the Clan Wars and the Day of Thunder, in the fictional Castle, Castle of the Endless Dawn. For more details, check out the link for setting. We will continue to play in that time until Alderac finishes producing the Secrets of the Clan books, which will update the Clans and 2nd edition up to Gold Edition. The story of the castle will then advance to Gold Edition. Which means that everyone will lose their characters. But this is not all for naught. For particularly notable characters will be noted in history, if they die, or perhaps come around occasionally as NPCs, if they survive. The GMs will be planning something major to happen at the end of the current period before advancing to Gold Edition. There will probably be several major somethings. But in the end the GMs will just lay out guidelines and what happens ultimately will rest in the hands of the PCs, it is entirely possible for the castle to become corrupted and we return to the game set in Gold Edition as a corrupted place, which the clans are trying to reclaim or destroy. Or perhaps the Scorpion reclaim it and try to reseal away the secrets that it holds.

But all of that is well into the future; they have not even started to release them. For now it must be decided who will really control the castle, the crane, scorpion, or the lion. The final outcome is in the hands of the PCs.

Man has it been a long time since I've seen this page. It's been a long time since I've started this site and I have learned a variety of things. The site is now using 3rd ed rules, which are infinitely better. It is also in a completely different setting. Faces have changed, some have stayed.. I've stayed. I'll update this page again soon.

A bit of technical information. I am running the chat on a Win2k professional box at the moment, using Apache to serve pages and php and mysql to handle all of the database needs. At the moment I only have 256k upstream on my DSL, if this ends up not being enough, I will upgrade to a 640k upstream and if that's not enough.. well.. something will have to be done. Other than that and the Domain Name, there are no costs, but if anyone wishes to help me with the cost of DSL, contact me at jeffvandenberg@gmail.com.
